Trust and legitimacy
1. Is red light therapy legit?
Red light devices are real consumer products that give off specific wavelengths, and the research around them is still developing. We make no health claims, so we suggest judging any product by what you can check yourself: published specs, warranty and return terms. Read our honest review
2. Is red light therapy a hoax?
A lot of the marketing around it is exaggerated, which is why we keep our own pages to specs and plain facts. Our myths versus facts guide shows how to tell marketing from evidence. Myths versus facts
3. How can I tell if a red light therapy device is real or any good?
Look for actual power draw, irradiance with the distance it was taken at, wavelengths, warranty length and return terms on the page. If any are missing, ask the seller before you buy. Ten specs to compare
4. Do cheaper red light therapy devices work?
Price alone does not answer that, because cheaper and pricier panels can print very different numbers. Compare published irradiance at a stated distance, actual power draw and warranty instead of the price tag. Panels under $300
5. Is American Wellness Authority a legitimate company?
AWA has sold online since 2016 and is based in Ocean, New Jersey, with a 60 day return window on every order. Our legitimacy page explains who we are and how to reach us. Is AWA legit?
Reading specs
6. What is irradiance, and why does it come with a distance?
Irradiance is how much light power lands on each square centimeter, shown in mW/cm2, and it falls as you move away from the panel. A figure with no distance cannot be compared with another. What is irradiance?
7. How close should I be to a red light panel?
Follow the manual for your model, since the right distance depends on the panel. Our FX panel pages suggest about 6 to 12 inches, and the distance guide explains how to set it up. Distance guide
8. What is the difference between red and near infrared light?
Red light is visible, around 660nm, while near infrared, around 850nm, is largely invisible to the eye. Many panels, including ours, use both. Red, near infrared and blue light
9. What do 660nm and 850nm mean on a spec sheet?
They are the wavelengths of the LEDs, measured in nanometers. Our FX panels list 660nm red and 850nm near infrared in a 1 to 1 ratio. 660nm versus 850nm
10. Which specs should I compare before buying a panel?
Actual power draw, irradiance with its distance, wavelengths, warranty length and return window. Our buying guide walks through eight things to check. Eight things to check
Safety and FDA wording
11. Is red light therapy safe?
That depends on your own situation, so follow the manual and check with your doctor if you have a medical condition, take medication or are pregnant. Our guide covers eye comfort, heat and when to ask a professional first. Safety guide
12. Do I need eye protection with a panel?

13. Are LED face masks FDA cleared?
The FDA clears devices rather than approving them, and each clearance belongs to a specific device. At AWA, select devices carry FDA 510(k) clearance for specific, limited uses; cleared for the face only. How to verify FDA claims
14. What does FDA 510(k) clearance actually mean?
It means the FDA reviewed a maker's submission and found one specific device substantially equivalent to a legally marketed device for specific, limited uses. It is not an approval, and it does not carry over to other products from the same brand. 510(k) explained
15. Can I use red light therapy with tretinoin or other medications?
That is a question for your doctor or pharmacist, because it depends on what you take. Our guide explains what to bring to that conversation. Retinol and tretinoin guide
