Red Light Therapy Panel vs. Face Mask: Which Device Do You Actually Need?
Published May 2026. Updated October 2026.
Quick answer
Choose a panel if you want wide coverage, you have space and you are happy to sit or stand at a set distance. Choose a mask if your routine is about the face and you want something hands free. The AWA panels, the FX300 ($199.99) and FX500 ($269.99), carry a 2 year warranty. The masks, the LX300 ($239.99) and LX500 ($279.99), carry 1 year and cover the face only. Many people end up with one of each.
Panels and face masks are the two most common red light therapy formats, and they work very differently in daily life. Both use LEDs and both list wavelengths, but one is a flat array you point at yourself from a distance and the other is a shaped, wearable device. This guide compares them on the things that decide whether you will keep using one: coverage, distance, routine, space and price.
The core difference
A panel is a flat LED array. You hang it or stand it up and sit or stand in front of it. Because it sits away from you, distance is something you control, and irradiance changes with it. A mask is worn on the face. It sits at a fixed, close distance, so there is nothing to position. It is hands free and rechargeable, and it covers the face only.

| Hands free | Yes, once hung or stood up | Yes |
| Power | Mains powered | Rechargeable |
| Space needed | A wall, door or stand area | A chair |

| Price today | $199.99 and $269.99 | $239.99 and $279.99 |
| Warranty | 2 years | 1 year |
| FDA wording | Sold as general wellness products | Select devices carry FDA 510(k) clearance for specific, limited uses; face only |
Select devices carry FDA 510(k) clearance for specific, limited uses; most are sold as general wellness products. The LX300 and LX500 masks are cleared for the face only.
Choose a panel if
- You want to use light on more than the face, from a distance.
- You have a wall, door or stand area and a chair.
- You are comfortable setting distance and checking the manual.
- You may share the device with another person at home.
The FX500 is the larger panel, with a foldable stand and remote, and the FX300 is the compact, lower priced one. See FX300 vs FX500 for the detail and the irradiance specs for the numbers.
Choose a mask if
- Your routine is face focused.
- You want to sit back and not think about distance.
- You like a rechargeable device with no cable in your way.
- You would rather have FDA 510(k) clearance for specific, limited uses on the device you wear, and you understand it is for the face only.
The LX500 has three modes (red plus near infrared, blue and mixed), 306 LED chips and a suggested routine of about 10 minutes, 3 to 4 times a week. The LX300 is the other mask. See LX300 vs LX500 and how to choose a face mask.
How the panel math works
Panels give you published irradiance at distances, which makes the math easy. Dose is J/cm² = mW/cm² x seconds / 1000. These are example numbers for arithmetic only, for a 600 second session (10 minutes).
| Panel and distance | Stated irradiance | Sum | Answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| FX300 at 6 inches | 83.5 mW/cm² | 83.5 x 600 / 1000 | 50.1 J/cm² |
| FX300 at 12 inches | 43.3 mW/cm² | 43.3 x 600 / 1000 | 25.98 J/cm² |
| FX500 at 6 inches | 94 mW/cm² | 94 x 600 / 1000 | 56.4 J/cm² |
| FX500 at 12 inches | 73.8 mW/cm² | 73.8 x 600 / 1000 | 44.28 J/cm² |
This shows how distance changes the numbers. It does not tell you how long to use a device. For that, follow the manual. Try your own on the red light dose calculator, the irradiance by distance chart or the session time table. For masks, AWA publishes a fixed routine rather than distance based figures, so there is no matching table here.
Buying one, then another
Plenty of people start with one and add the other. Here is the combined cost today, so you can plan.
| Combination | Sum | Total |
|---|---|---|
| FX300 and LX300 | $199.99 + $239.99 | $439.98 |
| FX500 and LX500 | $269.99 + $279.99 | $549.98 |
If you can only buy one, pick the format that fits your routine. Our panel vs mask vs belt guide adds the belt to the comparison, and you can see all formats in the AWA red light therapy collection.
What to check on either one
- Exact wavelengths, not a broad range.
- Irradiance at a stated distance for panels, and the published routine for masks.
- The warranty in years and the return window. The FX300 and FX500 pages list 60 days with free US return shipping.
- Accurate FDA wording for the specific device, not the brand.
Safety and eye protection
Use the goggles supplied with a panel, never look directly at the LEDs, and follow each manual for distance, time and frequency. Our eye protection guide explains why. If you have any medical question, or take medicines that affect how you react to light, speak to a qualified professional first.
Common mistakes
- Expecting a mask to cover areas other than the face.
- Buying a panel with nowhere to hang or stand it.
- Quoting irradiance without a distance.
- Comparing LED counts between a panel and a mask. They are not comparable numbers.
- Skipping the manual.
The short version
Wide coverage at a distance means a panel. Face focused and hands free means a mask. Check wavelengths, irradiance at a stated distance, warranty and price, and run the numbers before you buy. This guide is general information and not medical advice.
Frequently asked questions
Should I buy a panel or a face mask first?
Choose by routine. A panel covers more from a distance, and a mask is worn on the face and is hands free. Pick the one you will use consistently.
Does a mask cover the body?
No. The LX300 and LX500 masks are made for the face only, and their FDA 510(k) clearance covers the face only.
Which has the longer warranty?
The FX300 and FX500 panels carry a 2 year warranty. The LX300 and LX500 masks carry a 1 year warranty.
How do I compare a panel with a mask on numbers?
You mostly cannot. Panels publish irradiance at distances, while masks sit at a fixed distance and have a published routine. Compare each on its own terms.
Are AWA devices FDA cleared?
Select devices carry FDA 510(k) clearance for specific, limited uses; most are sold as general wellness products. The LX300 and LX500 masks are cleared for the face only. Panels are sold as general wellness products.
