Can You Use Red Light Therapy With Retinol or Tretinoin?
Red light therapy and retinoids (retinol, tretinoin) are two of the most popular anti-aging tools. Can you use them together? In most cases, yes — and they can be complementary — but timing matters.
They work differently
Retinoids speed cell turnover, while red light supports collagen and calms inflammation. Used thoughtfully, red light may even help reduce the irritation and redness retinoids can cause.
How to combine them safely
- Do red light on clean, bare skin and apply retinol or tretinoin afterward, not before, since light works best without product in the way.
- Start slow if your skin is new to retinoids, to avoid stacking too much irritation at once.
- Moisturize and use sunscreen during the day.
What about sensitivity?
Red light therapy does not use UV and does not burn, but retinized skin can be more reactive. If you notice stinging, space them out (red light in the morning, retinoid at night). See our safety guide.
If you use prescription tretinoin or have a skin condition, check with your dermatologist. This is educational, not medical advice.
