Best Red Light Therapy Panel for a Small Room: How to Measure and Choose

Published October 2026. Updated October 2026.

Quick answer

For a small room, the best panel is the one you can place at its working distance without moving furniture every session. The AWA panel pages list about 6 to 12 inches from the area you are using. Measure the clear depth in front of a door or wall, add the panel thickness and the gap, and only then compare the FX300 (hanging panel with rope and door hook) with the FX500 (foldable stand and remote).

What a small room really limits

In a small room the panel itself is rarely the problem. The limit is depth: the panel needs a working distance, and you need to stand or sit in front of it. Width matters less, because a panel is used from the front.

Three things decide whether a panel fits a tight space: how it mounts, how much clear floor you have in front of the mount, and how close the nearest outlet is. Each AWA panel page lists a corded power supply (AC 100 to 240V), so the cord has to reach the outlet without crossing a walkway.

Mounting options for a tight space

These facts come from the AWA product pages and our device comparison page. Where a page does not list something, the table says so.

Mounting style What the page lists Good for a small room because
Door hook Both panels list a door hook in the box Uses the back of a door, so no floor space is lost when the door is closed
Hanging kit and rope FX300 lists a hanging kit and a 2m adjustable rope; FX500 lists a hanging kit You can set the height by eye and take it down in a minute
Foldable stand FX500 is listed as a foldable stand panel Folds flat for a closet or under a bed, so the room stays clear between sessions
Wall mount Not listed as included. Check each page for what is in the box Needs your own hardware, so measure the wall and check the manual first

Measure your room in five steps

  1. Pick the spot where the panel will hang or stand and where you will sit or stand to use it.
  2. Measure the clear distance from that wall or door straight out to the nearest obstacle, such as a bed, desk or dresser.
  3. Subtract the thickness of the panel and its hook or stand. Check the product page for what is in the box.
  4. Subtract the working distance you plan to use. The pages list about 6 to 12 inches.
  5. What is left must hold you. If it does not, you can still sit sideways, but plan for the longer distance and the lower irradiance that comes with it.

Footprint arithmetic (example numbers for arithmetic only)

The body depths below are example numbers for arithmetic only. Measure yourself and your chair. The working distance comes from the product pages. Add the thickness of the panel itself on top.

Setup Working distance Your depth (example) Clear depth needed
FX300 on a door, standing at 6 in 6 in 10 in 16 in
FX300 on a door, standing at 12 in 12 in 10 in 22 in
FX500 on a stand, seated at 6 in 6 in 18 in 24 in
FX500 on a stand, seated at 12 in 12 in 18 in 30 in

Add the width of the stand feet if you use the FX500 stand. The page lists the panel size, not the stand footprint, so measure the stand when it arrives and compare it with your floor space.

Why distance matters more in a small room

If you can only manage the short distance, or only the long one, the irradiance you get changes a lot. These are the published AWA figures from our FX300 and FX500 irradiance specs, with the energy for a 10 minute session worked out using J/cm² = mW/cm² x seconds / 1000. The energy figures are arithmetic from the spec, not a recommended session.

Panel and distance Stated irradiance (mW/cm²) Energy at 10 min (J/cm²)
FX300 at 6 in 83.5 50.1
FX300 at 12 in 43.3 26.0
FX500 at 6 in 94 56.4
FX500 at 12 in 73.8 44.3

The FX500 keeps more of its irradiance at 12 inches than the FX300 does (73.8 compared with 43.3). If your room only allows the longer distance, that is worth knowing. If you can easily manage 6 inches, the gap between the two panels is smaller. Your device manual sets the actual session time and distance. See the irradiance by distance chart for every published point and the dose calculator to run your own numbers.

FX300 or FX500 for a small room

Question FX300 FX500
Listed form Hanging panel with rope Foldable stand panel
Remote Not listed in the box Remote included
Stored away Take it off the hook Fold the stand
Published irradiance at 12 in 43.3 mW/cm² 73.8 mW/cm²
Includes goggles and door hook Yes Yes

The FX300 page describes a focused, mid size panel for specific zones. The FX500 page describes a full body panel. Dimensions alone do not show coverage, so read each page before you decide. Our FX300 vs FX500 comparison goes deeper.

Other room details that matter

  • Outlet reach. Both panels are corded. Plan the cord path so nobody steps on it.
  • Eye protection. Both panels list goggles in the box. Keep them where you use the panel.
  • Noise. The FX500 page describes quiet cooling. A small room amplifies any fan noise, so check the page for what is listed.
  • Door use. If the panel hangs on a door, check the door can be closed and locked from the inside while it hangs, if privacy matters to you.
  • Hot surfaces and clearance. Follow the manual for how much open space a panel needs around it.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring the wall but not the depth in front of it. The working distance is part of the footprint.
  • Choosing by panel size alone. Dimensions do not show coverage or irradiance.
  • Forgetting the cord. A short route to the outlet decides where you can actually set up.
  • Hanging a panel on a door that is used all day. Pick a spot where it can stay put during a session.
  • Ignoring storage. If it is a hassle to set up, it will not be used. A fold flat stand or a hook removes that step.
  • Skipping the manual. Distance and session time belong to the device instructions, not to this guide.

Before you use any light device: read the label, follow the device manual, and use eye protection as directed. Ask a doctor first if you have a medical condition, take medications, are pregnant, or have light sensitivity.

Frequently asked questions

How much space does a red light therapy panel need?

The AWA panel pages list a working distance of about 6 to 12 inches. Add the panel thickness and the space you take up, then measure the clear depth in front of your mount. Example numbers in the planner above are for arithmetic only.

Can a panel hang on a door in a small room?

Both AWA panels list a door hook in the box, and the FX300 also lists a hanging kit with rope. Check that your door and hinges suit the weight and follow the manual.

Does a smaller room mean I should buy the smaller panel?

Not necessarily. Depth in front of the panel matters more than panel size. Dimensions listed on the product pages do not show coverage, so read the full page and the irradiance figures.

Does irradiance change if I sit farther back?

Yes. The published figures fall as distance rises, for example from 83.5 to 43.3 mW/cm² on the FX300 between 6 and 12 inches. Use the dose calculator to see how time and distance combine.

Who sets the right distance and session time?

The device manual and product page do. This guide only explains the space and the arithmetic. Ask a doctor about any personal health question.
