Red Light Panel and Belt Basics: Distance, Session Time and Frequency

Quick answer: Three settings shape every session with a panel or belt: how far the device sits from you, how long it runs, and how often you use it. Distance changes the power that reaches you, time changes the total energy, and frequency is a routine choice. Always follow the manual that comes with your device. This is general information, not medical advice.

Distance changes power

Irradiance is the power per square centimeter that reaches a surface, measured in mW/cm2. It is highest close to the device and drops as you move away. Measured values for AWA panels:

Distance FX300 (mW/cm2) FX500 (mW/cm2)
2 in 145 220
3 in 116 197
6 in 83.5 94
12 in 43.3 73.8

The full table lives in our FX300 and FX500 irradiance specs post.

Time changes total energy

Energy per area, called dose, follows a simple formula: J/cm2 = mW/cm2 x seconds / 1000. These are example numbers for arithmetic only. At 83.5 mW/cm2 for 600 seconds, the arithmetic gives 83.5 x 600 / 1000 = 50.1 J/cm2. Cut the time in half and the number halves too. Our dose and irradiance guide walks through more examples.

Frequency is a routine choice

How many days a week you use a device is a scheduling decision. Check the manual for the maker's guidance, keep the schedule simple enough to repeat, and avoid stacking several long sessions on top of each other.

Belt or panel

  • The wearable belt sits against you, so distance stays fixed and you only choose the time.
  • The FX300 and FX500 panels let you change the distance, so you control both.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing spec sheets measured at different distances.
  • Assuming longer sessions are always better. Follow the manual.
  • Guessing the distance instead of measuring it once with a tape measure.
  • Looking into the lights. Close your eyes or use eye protection if the manual advises it.

Frequently asked questions

Does a closer panel always mean a better session?
Closer means higher irradiance, not a guaranteed outcome. Comfort and the manual come first.

How do I find my distance?
Measure from the emitting surface to your skin with a tape measure and keep that spot the same each time.

Is a belt measured the same way?
No. A belt sits in contact, so the useful numbers are its listed power and the run time in the manual.

Are these devices FSA and HSA eligible?
Many are. See how to pay with your FSA or HSA.
