Red Light Therapy for Hair Loss: Does It Regrow Hair?

Last updated May 2026

Hair loss is one of the conditions where red light therapy has genuine clinical validation — the FDA has cleared specific red light devices for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss). That's a meaningful endorsement. But the picture is more nuanced than the marketing usually suggests.

The Short Answer

For androgenetic alopecia (genetic pattern hair loss in both men and women), red light therapy has FDA-cleared devices and reasonably solid clinical evidence. Results vary significantly by individual but typically show 25–40% increase in hair density over 16–24 weeks of consistent use.

For other types of hair loss (alopecia areata, telogen effluvium, traction alopecia, scarring alopecias), the evidence is much weaker. Always identify the type of hair loss before choosing intervention.

How It Works for Hair

Hair follicles sit relatively shallow in the scalp — well within the penetration depth of red light (around 660nm). The mechanism is the same as for skin: light absorption by cytochrome c oxidase, increased ATP production in follicle cells, enhanced blood flow to the follicle area.

In androgenetic alopecia, follicles miniaturize and produce progressively thinner, shorter hairs. Red light therapy appears to support follicle function, helping miniaturized follicles produce slightly more robust hair.

What the Research Shows

A 2013 study by Lanzafame et al. in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine found significant increases in hair density and hair count in men with androgenetic alopecia after 16 weeks of red light therapy use. A 2014 review by Avci et al. in the same journal compiled the broader evidence base, supporting clinical use for pattern hair loss.

Effect sizes are real but modest. Don't expect to grow back hair where the follicle is completely gone. Do expect partially miniaturized hair to thicken, with potential for some additional density.

How to Use It

20–25 minutes per session, 3–4 sessions per week, on a clean, product-free scalp. Direct exposure of light to scalp matters — if you have thick hair, part it to ensure light reaches the scalp.

Expect 4–6 months before you see measurable changes. Take baseline photos in good lighting before you start.

Critical: this works in combination with your existing hair loss protocol (finasteride, minoxidil, etc.), not as a replacement.

Choosing a Device for Hair

For scalp coverage you want a device that can reach the affected area effectively. Specialized red light hair caps and combs exist, but a quality handheld with 660nm wavelength — like our handheld device — works for targeted scalp areas.

For broader coverage, sitting under one of our FX300 or FX500 panels at scalp distance also delivers the right wavelength.

What It Won't Do

Won't regrow hair on completely bald patches where follicles are gone. Won't address hair loss from medications, illness, or hormonal conditions without treating the underlying cause. Won't work as a quick fix — minimum 4 months consistent use to assess.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it work for women's hair loss? Yes — clinical trials include both men and women with androgenetic alopecia.

Can I combine it with minoxidil or finasteride? Yes, and most evidence suggests combination is more effective than either alone.

How long until results? 4–6 months minimum to assess. Some people see results sooner, some later.

Will hair grow on completely bald spots? Generally no — once follicles are completely gone, they're gone. Best results in areas with miniaturized hair.

Is it safe long-term? Yes — no concerning long-term side effects in the clinical literature.

The Bottom Line

For pattern hair loss, red light therapy has genuine clinical validation. Combined with the conventional treatments your dermatologist would recommend (minoxidil, finasteride), it adds meaningful potential benefit at low risk.

Patience is essential. So is consistency. So is realistic expectation setting — this isn't going to grow back the hairline you had at 25.
